    The beautiful queen Partenope can hardly save escape her admirers: three princes vie for her favor. One of them, Arsace, haseven abandoned his bride Rosmira for her. But the latter is out to get revenge: disguising herself as the Armenian nobleman Eurimene, she joins the three princes as another suitor. In this four-way fight among rivals, things become quite heated. Prince Emilio even resorts to the threat of war because Partenope will not hear him out. And Arsace, who soon recognizes Eurimene’s true identity, is challenged by this “rival” to a climactic duel – but then insists it take place without their shirts on. Which means only a confession can untie the plot’s almost inextricable knot. Partenope is Handel’s most absurd opera, sparkling with an irony that ridicules the heroic style, military music, and the conventions of “trouser roles.” A treat for William Christie and the graduates of his master workshop Le Jardin des Voix, who will bring this rarely performed masterpiece to the concert hall in a semi-staged arrangement.

    Partenope is performed uncut and without intermission. The semi-staged version lasts approx. 120 minutes.

    Les Arts Florissants

    The ensemble Les Arts Florissants was founded in 1979. Its name comes from an opera by Marc-Antoine Charpentier. The artistic director since the beginning has been the harpsichordist and conductor William Christie; he is assisted by Paul Agnew, who was appointed Musical Co-Director in 2019. The ensemble has unearthed numerous forgotten works from the treasure troves of the Bibliothèque nationale de France, bringing them back into the repertoire: not just compositions from the French grand siècle but from 17th- and 18th-century European music in general. Since their operatic debut with Lully’s Atys, which took place at the Opéra Comique in Paris in 1987, Les Arts Florissants have devoted themselves intensively to music theater. They perform around 100 times each season, most notably at the Paris Philharmonie, the Théâtre de Caen, the Paris Opéra Comique, the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, and the Palace of Versailles, as well as in New York, London, Edinburgh, Brussels, Vienna, Salzburg, Madrid, Barcelona, and Moscow. Since 2012, the ensemble has presented the festival Dans les Jardins de William Christie. Through the vocal academy Le Jardin des Voix and the program The Arts Flo Juniors, it is dedicated to cultivating highly talented young musicians. Les Arts Florissants is supported by the French State, the Direction régionale des affaires culturelles des Pays de la Loire, the Département de la Vendée, and the Region Pays de la Loire. In residence at the Philharmonie de Paris, they are "Centre Culturel de Rencontre". The Selz Foundation and American Friends of Les Arts Florissants are sponsors.

    William Christie

    Harpsichordist, conductor, and musicologist William Christie was born in Buffalo, New York, in 1944 and studied music at Harvard and Yale Universities. He settled in France in 1971 and began giving concerts throughout Europe. His career took a decisive upswing with the founding of the ensemble Les Arts Florissants in 1979, with which Christie has devoted himself primarily to the French Baroque repertoire from Charpentier to Rameau. Since their performance of Lully’s Atys at the Opéra Comique in Paris in 1987, staged productions have also been on the program, whether in Paris or at the Aix-en-Provence Festival, where Christie has presented operas from Monteverdi to Mozart. He has performed works by Handel and Rameau at the Glyndebourne Festival; has conducted Gluck’s Iphigénie en Tauride, Rameau’s Les Indes galantes, Charpentier’s Médée, and, most recently, Handel’s Semele, among others, at Zurich Opera; and has devoted himself to Mozart’s Così fan tutte at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, to Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas at the Vienna Festival, and to Monteverdi’s Poppea at the Salzburg Festival. In 2021, he conducted a new production of Mondonville’s Titon et l’Aurore in Paris. Christie has also worked with the Berlin Philharmonic on several occasions. Commitment to education is of great importance to him: in 1982, he became the first American to receive a professorship at the Paris Conservatoire, where he led the early music class until 1995. In Caen, he founded Le Jardin des Voix, an academy for young singers, in 2002. And he has been conducting master classes twice a year since 2007 at New York’s Juilliard School of Music. William Christie has recorded more than 100 CDs, many of which have garnered awards. He took French citizenship in 1995. He is a Commander of the Legion of Honor and in the Order of Arts and Letters and has been named a Grand Officier dans l’Ordre National du Mérite.

    Sophie Daneman

    The British soprano Sophie Daneman studied at the London Guildhall School of Music and Drama and became known worldwide in the early 1990s as an interpreter of Baroque works, which she performed primarily under the direction of William Christie. In addition, she also added such roles as Susanna in Mozart’s Figaro and Debussy’s Mélisande to her repertoire and has appeared in such works as Leonard Bernstein’s Wonderful Town and Tod Machover’s Skellig. Sophie Daneman has performed with the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and with such conductors such as John Eliot Gardiner, Philippe Herreweghe, and Neville Marriner. She is also a successful lied singer and has recorded works by Mendelssohn and Schumann. Sophie Daneman has moreover been making her mark as a stage director: most recently, she staged Mozart’s La finta giardiniera for Les Arts Florissants in 2019, with performances in Valencia, Paris, and Vienna.
