    Josef Suk has been high on Kirill Petrenko’s list of priorities ever since he discovered the Czech composer’s music as a student. Suk’s opulent sound world, which combines echoes of Wagner with the Bohemian tradition and influences from Impressionism, captivated him from the start. For the Berlin Philharmonic’s second performance, Petrenko has chosen A Summer’s Tale, which Suk composed after the deaths of his beloved wife Otilie and father-in-law Antonín Dvořák. The five movements represent a journey through the day, from the first hour of the morning until deep into the night, representing the attempt to find one’s way back to life after suffering tragedy. But in the process, the imaginary “hero” also has to contend with crazy delusions, hallucinations, and a witches’ sabbath before he finds peace in the end. The concert will be opened by Anna Vinnitskaya, who is celebrated as both a virtuoso and a poet of sound: she will play the breath-taking D-flat major Piano Concerto, with which the young Sergei Prokofiev suddenly rose to fame as an “enfant terrible.”

    In 1882, 54 ambitious musicians joined to form a new orchestra in Berlin, with the aim of presenting their own concerts. This marked the birth of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. As leader they chose Hans von Bülow, one of the finest conductors of the time: he laid the foundation for the ensemble’s high level of playing. His successors include Arthur Nikisch (1895-1922), Wilhelm Furtwängler (1922-54), and Herbert von Karajan (1955-89), who decisively shaped the orchestra’s sound and established its international fame. From 1989 to 2002, Claudio Abbado brought new areas into focus as Principal Conductor, especially contemporary compositions. From 2002 to 2018, Sir Simon Rattle continued to expand the repertoire and established innovative concert formats. Kirill Petrenko has been Principal Conductor since 2019. The Classical-Romantic repertoire, Russian music, and unjustly forgotten composers are focuses of his work. Another key concern for Petrenko is the education program, with which the orchestra reaches out to new audiences. The Digital Concert Hall, which opened in 2009, broadcasts Philharmonic concerts live via the Internet. CD and DVD releases have appeared on the orchestra’s in-house label, Berliner Philharmoniker Recordings, since 2014. Once a year, the Philharmonic also plays as an opera orchestra at its Easter Festival, which, after 45 years in Salzburg, has been held in Baden-Baden since 2013. The Berliner Philharmoniker Foundation is supported by the state of Berlin and the federal government, as well as by the generous commitment of Deutsche Bank as the main sponsor.

    Kirill Petrenko

    Kirill Petrenko has been Principal Conductor and Artistic Director of the Berlin Philharmonic since August 2019. Born in 1972 in Omsk, Siberia, he moved with his family to Vorarlberg in Austria at the age of 18. Following his training in conducting at the Vienna Academy of Music, he began his career with an engagement at the Vienna Volksoper in 1997 and subsequently served as General Music Director at the Meiningen Theater (1999-2002), the Komische Oper Berlin (2002-07), and the Bavarian Staatsoper (2013-20). He has guest conducted at such companies as the Vienna Staatsoper, the Dresden Semperoper, the Royal Opera House in London, New York’s Metropolitan Opera, and the Opéra national de Paris. From 2013 to 2015, he conducted Wagner’s Ring des Nibelungen at the Bayreuth Festival.Petrenko launched his tenure with the Berlin Philharmonic with Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. In addition to tackling the core Classical-Romantic repertoire, he focuses on unjustly neglected compositions and is committed to contemporary music. In the 2021-22 season, he and the orchestra will perform works by composers who suffered under Nazi terror, such as Leone Sinigaglia, Karl Amadeus Hartmann, Erwin Schulhoff, and Alexander Zemlinsky. He also will conduct a wide repertoire ranging from Felix Mendelssohn to Bernd Alois Zimmermann. Projects with the Karajan Academy and the German National Youth Orchestra exemplify his commitment to the training of young musicians. He also dedicates himself to educational projects. Petrenko conducts concerts as well as opera productions at the Easter Festival in Baden-Baden. He regularly appears on tour with the Berlin Philharmonic at the festivals in Salzburg and Lucerne and in European music capitals, and, in the near future, will tour to Asia. In addition to works by John Adams and Gustav Mahler, he has recorded symphonies by Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, and Franz Schmidt.

    LUCERNE FESTIVAL debut  on 7 September 2016, when Petrenko conducted the Bavarian Staatsorchester in a Wagner-Strauss program.

    Anna Vinnitskaya

    The daughter of a pair of pianists, Anna Vinnitskaya was born in 1983 in Novorossiysk, Russia, a port city on the Black Sea. She began her piano training with her mother at the age of six and gave her first piano recital when she was nine. Vinnitskaya completed her studies with Sergei Osipenko at the Rachmaninoff Conservatory in Rostov-on-Don and with Evgeni Koroliov at the Hamburg Hochschule für Musik und Theater, where she was appointed professor of piano in October 2009. Vinnitskaya launched her international career in 2007 by winning first prize at the Concours Reine Elisabeth in Brussels, and in 2008 she received the Leonard Bernstein Award. Since then, she has performed with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Israel Philharmonic, Munich Philharmonic, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, NHK Symphony Orchestra, Bamberg Symphony Orchestra, and Orchestre de la Suisse Romande. She made her debuts with the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden and the Berlin Philharmonic in 2019 with Prokofiev’s Second Piano Concerto and, in 2020, with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra playing Shostakovich’s Second Piano Concerto and with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France with Rachmaninoff’s Third. Her partners on the podium include Iván Fischer, Alan Gilbert, Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla, Marek Janowski, Andris Nelsons, Kirill Petrenko, and Krzysztof Urbański. As a recitalist, Vinnitskaya has made guest appearances in the major concert halls of many European countries as well as in the USA, Brazil, Japan, South Korea, and China. She has received such distinctions as the Diapason d’or and the Echo Klassik for her recordings, which include the Shostakovich concertos with the Kremerata Baltica, works by Rachmaninoff with the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra, and keyboard concertos by Johann Sebastian Bach with the Kammerakademie Potsdam. Her latest album, which focuses on the Ballades and Impromptus of Frédéric Chopin, was released in February 2021.

    Lucerne Festival appearance debut on 30 August 2011, as part of the Debut series in a program of works by Debussy, Scriabin, and Ravel.
